Because we loved you so much, we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well. – 1 Thessalonians 2:8
Recently a young lady who volunteered at the Attic Teen Center many years ago saw a post I made on Facebook about needing to hire an employee for our Thrift Store. I received a couple other inquiries about the position, but when I saw her message come through I immediately knew I wanted to hire her. I was familiar with how hard she worked, how seriously she took responsibility and I knew she would be a perfect fit for what we needed.
Of course, it also gave me the chance to get involved in her life again. When she was a teen, she spent countless Friday and Saturday nights making sure everything ran smoothly backstage at the teen centers. And if you’ve never worked with bands, this can be quite the challenge! She treated everyone well, but she took her position seriously.
After she finished her first week of work, she called me and told me she was in the hospital and, would miss a few days. Later I got the phone call – she has cancer. Now, she told me as far as cancer goes she hit the lottery because it is one that is easy to treat and unlikely to come back, and I knew she was scared and this was overwhelming for her. She apologized over and over again for missing work, feeling like she had let us down.
I was stunned of course but kept thinking, this is why we have reconnected right now. It isn’t every day you get a new employee who you are able to have indepth conversations about the character of God and why things happen the way they do. She knows my heart and the hard things that I have walked through so she can believe me when I say that I’ve walked through dark times myself and I believe God is STILL so good! It is a beautiful thing.
This young lady was the first to spend a week at our house, living on the couch, before Harvest House even existed. And now, although Harvest House is about the young ladies living here in the home, God has given us a reach far beyond these young women. Young ladies who have lived here in the past, young ladies we know through the teen centers, young people in our churches – they are ALL our mission and we are thankful for all the young women we get to be involved with because of this ministry!
