The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit. – Proverbs 18:21
Part of my job is to sell things on eBay. Not everyone who buys something leaves a feedback, but in the past 12 months I’ve received 646 feedback responses from customers. Of those responses, two were neutral and one was negative. Every day when I log into the account guess what I see? Those glaring neutrals and negatives. For some reason, it is easy to look past the numbers in the positive row and only see those neutrals and negatives.
I feel like a lot of times the work at Harvest House is similar. We try to retrain eyes to see positives. We spend time pointing out growth, maturity, and right responses. I know the girls hear us, but those voices whispering the negatives and neutrals seem to carry so much more weight than if I shout the positives.
I’ve read it takes five positive interactions to make up for one negative one. I’m not entirely sure I agree with the number though. In my experience, one negative remark can derail a remarkable amount of steady progress.
Friends, remember there is power in your words! It is usually quite easy to be critical and much more difficult to find positives, especially in tough situations. I promise, they are worth looking for and pointing out!
