September 2021 - A Look Back
“ I thank my God every time I think of you! I always pray with joy, whenever I pray for you all…” Philippians 1:3-4
Eight years ago today, Aaron and I moved across town into Harvest House. I always get a little nostalgic this time of year because it was a big move for us. We were a brand-new little family with two kiddos and two on the way. We were just figuring out adulthood ourselves and there we were, getting ready to start this journey of being house parents, caregivers, and mentors literally around the clock.
Some of the girls here need a home, a safe roof over their heads and a place to go at night. Some of them though, need a family. People who rally around them and tell them it is all going to be ok. I found a few of the girls took me at my word when I said I was on their team and would do my best to help them, and some of them put me to the test to see if I’d stick it out. I learned how important celebrations are for both big and small victories.
We have had ladies leave on good terms, and others with sadness. Some of them keep in touch and some choose not to. A few still work at the thrift store and we get to see them regularly. Eight years is a lot of time to build relationships and add to this little family of ours. Their names are listed on my wall. I needed multiple pieces of paper. I think about these girls and the unique lessons they taught me – and the lessons I hope I taught them.
And most of all? I thank God for it. All of it. The good, the bad, the easy, the hard. I thank Him for the nights I lay awake worrying how their lives will turn out and the moments His comfort is easily felt. I thank Him we get to be a part of this ministry and for wisdom for what comes next. And I am grateful for every one of those 2,920 days I’ve called this house home and for the season of life I get to call each of those girls mine.
